Group Adventures

Neon Canyon & the Cathedral

In October 2024, six adventurers gathered for a weekend escape to the dramatic landscapes of southern Utah. The destination was Escalante, a gateway to some of the most mesmerizing and lesser-known corners of the desert, specifically to an area locals call “Egypt” for its otherworldly beauty.

With the sun below the horizon, the group set out, their spirits high and their gear ready for the day’s challenge. The eventual sunrise was so breathtaking, for a moment they forgot about everything else. Their hike began with a descent into a valley where a small river had carved its path through time, flanked by towering cliffs that seemed to touch the sky. Autumn had painted the sparse trees in shades of vibrant yellow, contrasting with the red and orange hues of the rock, creating a scene straight out of a painter’s dream.

As they walked, the silence was broken only by the gentle flow of water and the soft sound of their footsteps in the sand, a reminder of how few had the privilege to tread this secluded path. They soon reached the Neon Canyon Trail, a route known for its beauty and danger, where the warmth of the day began to assert itself, urging them to move with purpose.

The trail led to the top of Neon Canyon, where the real adventure began – a series of rappels down into the heart of the canyon. This wasn’t a journey for the faint-hearted; Neon Canyon had claimed lives before due to its technical nature, demanding respect and meticulous attention to safety. Each rappel was executed with caution, the ropes taut with responsibility as the group descended.

The canyon soon tightened into a slot, where the walls narrowed and water pooled, turning the path into a wet labyrinth. Here, they donned wetsuits, their bodies now armored against the cold, dark waters. The rappels became more complex, each drop bringing them deeper into the canyon’s embrace.

Finally they arrived to the descent into the Cathedral, a geological marvel hidden deep within a remote desert canyon. The final rappel was through a hole at the top of the dome-like Cathedral, an 83-foot plunge into the abyss below. The experience was nothing short of terrifying, a true test of nerve where the adrenaline was palpable. Dropping down through that hole into the water of the cathedral, each member felt an immense surge of accomplishment, their confidence not just in themselves but in each other, solidified.

Once the rappels were behind them, the hike back to the parking lot brought long, mostly uphill hiking. Yet, the physical toll of the day did little to dampen the spirits. Each step back was a step away from the raw intensity of nature, but also a step closer to the shared memory of what they had achieved together.

By the time they returned to their starting point, the sun was setting, painting the sky in hues that mirrored the earth they had just explored. Every face bore a smile, reflecting the joy of having conquered one of Utah’s most formidable adventures. The day, though short, was intense, a testament to the fact that adventures need not be lengthy to be transformative.

This weekend trip was more than just an escape from routine; it was a narrative of overcoming fear, building trust, and reinforcing bonds. It taught them that even in the briefest of escapades, one can find profound experiences that echo long after the journey ends. As they drove back, the silence was comfortable, filled with the unspoken understanding that they had shared something extraordinary, something they would carry with them, a story to tell and retell, a confidence booster, and a reminder of the beauty and danger that coexist in our vast, wild world.
